Our Sustainability & Community Impact

At Cenderawasihbay.com, we believe that our presence in one of the world’s most pristine marine ecosystems comes with a profound responsibility. We are not merely visitors; we are custodians. As a division of the Juara Holding Group, our approach to sustainability is not an afterthought—it is woven into the very fabric of our operations. Our mission is to ensure that our luxury expeditions create a net positive impact, contributing directly to the conservation of Cenderawasih Bay’s biodiversity and the economic empowerment of its local communities.

Environmental Commitments

Our strategy for environmental stewardship is built on measurable actions and transparent partnerships.

1. Carbon Responsibility Program

We acknowledge the carbon footprint of travel. To address this, we have implemented a comprehensive offsetting program. For every client journey, we calculate the total carbon emissions from their international flights to Indonesia and all domestic travel associated with their trip. We then purchase verified carbon credits from the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve project in Kalimantan, which protects high-conservation-value peat swamp forests and supports local community development.

2. Marine Conservation Contribution

We commit 2% of our net revenue from every trip directly to on-the-ground conservation efforts within the bay. This funding is channeled through a transparent partnership with a local NGO and the Balai Besar Taman Nasional Teluk Cenderawasih (BTNTC). The funds are specifically earmarked for:

  • Joint Patrols: Fueling and equipping patrol boats that monitor the park for illegal and destructive fishing practices.
  • Whale Shark Research: Supporting the data collection and tagging programs that help scientists understand and protect the bay’s unique whale shark population.
  • Coral Reef Monitoring: Funding regular reef health surveys to track the impacts of climate change and ensure our own activities have no negative effects.

3. Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy

All our chartered phinisi yachts and partner vessels operate under our strict zero single-use plastic policy. We provide all guests and crew with reusable stainless steel water bottles and rely on advanced onboard water filtration systems. All provisions are sourced with minimal packaging, and we work with our suppliers in ports like Manokwari and Nabire to reduce their plastic footprint.

Community Empowerment

A thriving local community is the most effective guardian of its environment. We are committed to ensuring that tourism provides direct, sustainable, and dignified economic benefits.

1. Local Employment & Training

We maintain a strict policy of ‘Local First’ for hiring. Over 85% of our on-the-ground team, including boat crew, guides, and operational support staff, are hired from the local communities surrounding Cenderawasih Bay. We invest in their professional development by funding their certification with HPI (Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia) and PADI, providing English language training, and promoting from within.

2. Supporting Local Enterprises

We actively seek to integrate local businesses into our supply chain. This includes purchasing fresh produce from village markets, sourcing unique amenities from local artisans, and promoting cultural experiences that are 100% owned and operated by the community, such as visits to see the crafting of traditional Noken bags (a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage item).

3. The Juara Community Fund

Beyond direct economic exchange, the Juara Holding Group maintains a dedicated community fund for the regions in which we operate. In Cenderawasih Bay, this fund is currently focused on an educational project in a partner village near Kwatisore, providing school supplies, books, and funding for supplementary teaching staff. We believe that investing in the education of the next generation is the most powerful way to ensure a sustainable future for the bay.

Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey of improvement and adaptation. It is integral to our identity and the promise we make to our clients and to the people and wildlife of Cenderawasih Bay. To learn more about the experts driving these initiatives, please see our Our Team page.

Deepening our marine conservation efforts

Beyond mitigating the carbon footprint of travel, our commitment extends directly into Cenderawasih Bay’s shimmering waters. Recognized as a global hotspot for marine biodiversity, it boasts an extraordinary array of endemic species like walking sharks and vibrant pygmy seahorses, alongside its famed resident whale sharks. Our expeditions are meticulously designed for minimal disturbance, adhering to strict no-touch policies and maintaining respectful distances from all marine life, particularly during encounters with these gentle giants. We aim to preserve the bay’s ecological integrity, ensuring its status as a sanctuary for both marine life and discerning travelers.
