Nabire
is the closest port to Kwatisore — roughly three to four hours by boat — and the standard start point for whale-shark-focused trips and land-based programs. Domestic flights connect via Makassar, Manado or Jayapura depending on the season’s schedules.
Manokwari
is the western gateway, convenient for full-bay safaris that open with the wreck sites nearby before working east toward Kwatisore.
Biak
serves northern and eastern itineraries and has historically offered the strongest flight connectivity into the region.

When is the season for Cenderawasih Bay?
The whale sharks are resident, so sightings are possible in every month of the year, and the bay itself is sheltered enough to dive year-round. The practical constraint is boat supply: most liveaboards position into Cenderawasih from roughly June through October, between Raja Ampat seasons, so that window has the widest choice of vessels and the fastest sell-out.

That said, the Kwatisore aggregation is resident and bagan-associated, which makes encounter rates here among the most consistent anywhere. Itineraries schedule multiple sessions across two or more days precisely to stack the odds.
02Do I need to be a certified diver?
No. The whale shark interaction works superbly on snorkel, and most boats welcome mixed groups of divers, snorkelers and freedivers. Dive certification only matters for the reef and wreck portions of full-bay itineraries.
03How far ahead should I book?
For June–October liveaboard cabins, six to twelve months ahead is realistic; the fleet is small. Private charters and crossing itineraries should be planned even earlier. Land-based Nabire trips can often be arranged within a few weeks.
04Can families and non-divers join?
