The practical constraint is boat supply: most liveaboards position into Cenderawasih from roughly June through October, between Raja Ampat seasons, so that window has the widest choice of vessels and the fastest sell-out. Do I need to be a certified diver?
No. The whale shark interaction works superbly on snorkel, and most boats welcome mixed groups of divers, snorkelers and freedivers. Dive certification only matters for the reef and wreck portions of full-bay itineraries.
How far ahead should I book?
For June–October liveaboard cabins, six to twelve months ahead is realistic; the fleet is small. Private charters and crossing itineraries should be planned even earlier. Land-based Nabire trips can often be arranged within a few weeks.
